Sol-Gel derived nanocomposite coatings can be tailored such that different functionalities can be incorporated into a single matrix, resulting in a multi-functional composite coating. Such coating technologies have a great scope in India because of their simplicity of deposition and their obvious utility. However, the Sol-Gel coating technology on a commercially relevant scale has not yet been available in the country for exploitation by the industry.
In realization of the above, a comprehensive facility to demonstrate the wide-ranging capabilities of this technology has been established by ARCI in collaboration with Engineered nanoProducts Germany Inc. (EPG), a management buyout company of the Institute for New Materials (INM) in Saarbrucken, Germany.

The specific objectives of the Joint Centre include the following
- Utilize the facility for developing various categories of coatings proven worldwide for diverse applications
- Develop new sol-based coatings and potential applications for varied industry segments
- Sensitize the Indian market to the diverse applications of sol-gel based nanocomposite coatings
- Commercialize sol-gel based nanocomposite coating technologies for industrial applications
