Biography

Personal Profile: Dr. L. Saravanan has been a Project Scientist at ARCI, Hyderabad, since January 2026. He is an experimental physicist specialising in magnetic materials (ferrites and thin films), with a focus on both fundamental research and applied energy solutions. He has established good national and international research collaborations. 


Educational Qualifications: Dr. L. Saravanan completed his PhD in Physics at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRM IST) in Kattankulathur, Chennai, from 2014 to 2019. He then received a National Postdoctoral Fellowship (NPDF) at IIT Delhi's Department of Physics (2019–2022). Following that, he held a FONDECYT postdoctoral position at the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM) in Valparaíso, Chile (South America), from 2022 to 2025, during which he accumulated extensive international research experience.


Research Experience:  He has extensive experience in the preparation and characterisation of magnetic materials in bulk, powder, and thin-film forms. His work includes rare-earth (RE)-based and RE-free permanent magnets for electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage, and sustainable technologies. He has also contributed to research on spintronic materials for MRAM, HDD, and high-frequency devices. His expertise spans thin-film deposition, interfacial engineering, and tuning magnetic anisotropy to enhance performance. Currently, he focuses on developing advanced magnetic materials to maximise BHmax in magnets for EVs, wind energy systems, and related applications. 


Technology Translation and Applications: His research emphasises translating laboratory findings into practical technologies. He focuses on scalable materials development and performance optimisation, aiming to reduce reliance on critical rare-earth elements while enabling efficient, cost-effective solutions for industrial applications.

✓Developing Rare-Earth (RE) and RE-free magnetic materials for Electric Vehicles (EV), Energy storage devices, Magnetic Sensors, Biomedical (magnetic drug transfer and MRI), high-frequency devices, and Stealth applications
✓Designed spintronic (magnetic memory) devices using STT/SOT/Magnetic Skyrmion mechanisms for data storage applications
✓Worked on surface/interface analysis of multilayer thin films
✓Synthesis and characterization, and making of permanent magnets
