Biography

K. Ramachandra Soma Raju holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Osmania University. He has over 35 years of professional experience in fabrication, machine maintenance, yarn processing, and the cement-bonded wood particle board manufacturing industry.

He joined the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), Hyderabad, in 1994, initially in the Surface Engineering Division. During his early tenure, he acquired extensive hands-on research experience in advanced coating and surface modification technologies, including detonation spray coating, plasma spray processing, high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) spray, wire arc spraying, micro-arc oxidation, and electrospark coatings, over a period of nearly ten years.

He played a key role in the indigenous development of four models of electrospark coating units and successfully facilitated the technology transfer of these systems to ten industries, through both exclusive and non-exclusive agreements.

In 2006, he joined the Centre for Sol-Gel Coatings at ARCI, where he was one of the two member group responsible for establishing a unique, state-of-the-art comprehensive facility for the demonstration and commercialization of sol-gel nanocomposite coating technologies for Indian market.

He has been actively involved in the development of various coating formulations and execution of several prestigious projects, along with four technology transfers in areas such as:

  • decorative coatings on glass 
  • corrosion-protective coatings for metals and alloys 
  • scratch- and abrasion-resistant coatings for composites 
  • barrier coatings for biodegradable and naturally compostable containers 
  • adhesion-promoting and corrosion-protective coatings for CTP plates used in offset printing 
  • abrasion- and tarnish-resistant transparent coatings for artificial jewellery 

    Mr. Raju has made significant research contributions, with 40 journal publications and book chapters, along with 15 patents to his credit.

His research interests include the development of sol-gel nanocomposite coating formulations for a wide range of advanced applications, including:
