At the heart of all electric vehicles (EV) are the batteries and electric motors. More than 90% of EV use brushless DC (BLDC) motors and Rare earth Nd-Fe-B magnet is a critical and indispensable component to manufacture these motors. BLDC motors are preferred as traction motors in EV’s as they are lighter and energy efficient compared to induction motor of similar rating. ARCI has ventured into setting up of pilot plant for manufacturing near net shaped Nd-Fe-B magnets through a major project funded by ANRF in line with the Athmanirbhar policy of the Government of India.

- Pilot scale facility with a capacity of producing 1 - 2 kg of Nd-Fe-B magnets per day.
- Capable to produce near-net shaped magnets
- High grade magnets with fine grain size and low oxygen content.
Potential Applications
- Electric Vehicles (EVs): Used in traction motors for electric cars, providing high efficiency and power in a small, lightweight package.
- Renewable Energy: Crucial for direct-drive generators in wind turbines to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy.
- Consumer Electronics: Power the voice coil motors (VCM) in computer hard drives (HDDs), microphones, smartphones, and high-fidelity loudspeakers.
- Industrial Automation: Used in robotics, servomotors, and automated industrial machinery for precise motion control.
- Medical Equipment: Found in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems.
