Biography

am Aruna N, working as a Technical Officer in Electronics and Instrumentation at ARCI (International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials), in the Electrical, Electronics and Civil Maintenance Centre, with over 17 years of hands-on experience in automation, instrumentation, and system support. My role involves close interaction with multiple centres, where I contribute to the development, maintenance, and smooth operation of various experimental and utility systems.

My work primarily focuses on the automation and integration of complex systems such as magnetron sputtering units (including cylindrical configurations), hydrogen permeation setups, vacuum systems, furnaces, and carbon nanotube generation units. I have  experience in developing LabVIEW-based control and data acquisition systems, along with embedded solutions using Arduino and microcontrollers for real-time monitoring and control applications.

I have significant experience in integrating different subsystems, including interfacing laser systems with lathe machines and adapting newly developed systems to work with existing non-compatible setups. I have worked extensively with Eurotherm controllers for temperature control and have implemented interlocks and control logics to ensure safe and reliable system operation.

In addition to system development, I am actively involved in installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of sophisticated equipment across ARCI centres. I also contribute to proof-of-concept work, including projects related to EV and hybrid systems.

I am passionate about knowledge sharing and actively train students and interns on Arduino and microcontroller-based system development, focusing on practical, hands-on learning and real-time applications.

Beyond research systems, I provide technical support for utility infrastructure across ARCI, including AMC and maintenance of UPS systems ranging from 3 kVA to 60 kVA, and telephone systems such as line laying, FTTH, and PRI connections.

My approach to work is always practical and solution-oriented, with a strong focus on reliability, cost-effectiveness, and user-friendly system design.

Research Areas of Interest

My work is centered on automation, instrumentation, and system integration for real-time monitoring and control of engineering systems. I focus on developing practical and reliable solutions that can be implemented in actual working environments.

I have developed LabVIEW-based control and data acquisition systems for applications such as AC power control, battery monitoring, and solar energy data logging. I have also worked on automation of magnetron sputtering systems, hydrogen permeation setups, vacuum systems, and carbon nanotube generation units.

My work involves integration of sensors, controllers, and DAQ systems, along with implementation of control strategies such as PID-based methods for maintaining process parameters like temperature and vacuum. I have experience working with Eurotherm controllers and developing interlock systems for operational safety.

I am also involved in solving system integration challenges, particularly in connecting newly developed systems with existing or non-compatible equipment. In addition, I actively handle troubleshooting and restoration of advanced laboratory equipment to ensure minimal downtime.

I also contribute to proof-of-concept development in areas such as EV and hybrid technologies. Overall, my work focuses on improving system performance, reliability, and developing efficient and practical engineering solutions.
